St. Gemma Galgani Church (Shwe-Pyi-Thar) & Infant Jesus of Prague Church (Hlaing-Tha-Yar)
The Capital Yangon is expanding new satellite towns that have emerged around Yangon since 1989. People are moving to these new towns – Dagon Myothit, Shwe-Pyi-Thar, and Hlaing Tha Yar – in the outskirt of Yangon. With this expansion, many Catholics and other Christians also moved to Shwe-Pyi-Tha and Hlaing-Tha-Yar towns.
In July 1990 a small chapel was built in Hlaing-Tha-Yar and was dedicated to the “INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE”. At that time the Faithful living in Hlaing-Tha-Yar and Shwe-Pyi-Thar were placed under the care of Fr. Edward San Thein, the parish priest of St. Lazarus’ Catholic Church in Insein. With the strenuous effort of Fr. Edward San Thein, the good seed of the word of God was sown on 18th January 1992. Then on 17th November 2002 Rev. Fr. Philip Mg Mg Gyi was appointed as the first Parish Priest of Hlaing-Tha-Yar and Shwe-Pyi-Thar.
But it is very sad to say that up to now there are no proper church lands and buildings, officially permitted by the Government, for the worship of the Catholics living in both towns. In 2004 statistics the number of the Catholics is 800.
