Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Pyayathonsu Parish) This Parish was established on the 28th April, 2003. It is about 47 miles south of Yangon and close to Bago Town. 15 years ago this place was thriving with three Groups – Pre-Major students, Pre-Minor students and Boarders. But for better organization and more efficient work all the Seminary Students have been relocated to Bago. In this new Parish, 3 Sisters (SFX) together with the parish priest are helping to care for the Mission and the Boarding. In this mission there are about 30 Catholic families with about 200 faithful. Kyauktaga & Pennwegone Mission
Kyauktaga is located 109 miles north of Yangon along the main road to Mandalay city, the second capital of Myanmar. This mission was at first under the mission of Nyaunglebin, which was opened by the French Missionary Fathers (MEP) in 1902. Since the Catholics here are Tamil, and with the intention of more effectiveness in the ministry, it was separated from Nyaunglebin mission in the 1980s. In the late 1990s, to spread the Good News of Christ to Kayin people, Penwegone mission was added to the Kyauktaga mission. Now these two missions – Kyauktaga and Pennwegone – are placed under one priest to take charge of them.
The people are Tamil and Kayin. There are about 15 Catholic families living in different places and villages. The Catholic population is just a small number of 55 according to the 2004 statistics. |
